The History of the Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church
This church history was taken from an article published in THE BANNER OF LOVE (May 1981), was
written in love for our church by Grace Morrisett, a member of the church for sixty years.
Additional comments have been added to her original work to reflect updates in the history of the
church.

As I write this brief record of the early days of our precious church called Shiloh at Crescent,
Oklahoma my mind goes back to the precious saints of God who labored in love and stood faithfully
for the doctrine and order of the church, and who lived and walked in paths of righteousness in
honor to themselves and to the grand old church which they loved so much.
As all of those early members have gone on to be with God to enjoy heaven and all that heaven is.
They are now resting from their labors, basking in the sunlight of God’s love.
At the time the church was organized in 1893, this part of the Oklahoma Territory had been opened
for settlement for homes, less than four years before, and the town was very small. During early days
of the church we met in our homes for divine worship. After the first school house was built, the
church met in it on the fourth Sunday and Saturday before. In 1901 plans were made to build a
church building, so in 1902, lots at 320 N. Fir were purchased from D.E. and Sarah Holliday and our
new building was soon completed. It was the first church building erected in Crescent.
Much love, particular care, and good hard work went into the building. Through the years its
members took good care of the building. The foundation and the floor were well built and the
building still stands solid and firm to this day. We believe it to be the oldest Primitive Baptist Church
building in the State of Oklahoma. In 1968 a nice kitchen and dining area were added.
The first members of Shiloh Church were George Simmons, Amanda Simmons, Mariah Murray, John
F. Pieratt and Sadie Pieratt. John Pieratt was the first clerk and Elder J. M. Thompson was the first
pastor. He served the church faithfully from 1893-1895. Other men who served as clerks in the early
years of the church were William W. Moffitt (1909-1931) and Williard Beavers (1931-?).
Other ministers who have been pastors at Shiloh Church are Elder John Lovett, formally of Kansas
(1895-1899) and Elder Henry Richards (1899-1900). Elder Thomas Vech was ordained in 1900 and he
and Elder Henry Richards served the church until the early 1920’s. Elder Frank McCormick was
pastor in the 1920’s. Elder D. E. Richards, Elder Henry Richard’s son, was pastor in the 1930’s. Elder
Oba M. Cummings served as pastor in the 1940’s. Elder John DeWitt was a faithful pastor for 29 years
(from 1950 to 1979), until his death July 2, 1979. Elder DeWitt united with the Primitive Baptist
Church at Crescent on July 27, 1947. He was baptized by Elder Oba Cummings who was our pastor at
that time. Elder DeWitt was ordained to the ministry on July 30, 1950. Elder Allen Daniels was
chosen as pastor of Shiloh Church on the Fourth Sunday of July 1980 and faithfully served until July
1989. Elder Henry Newman became the pastor in 1989 and continued on with us until our last official
meeting held on November 25, 2007.
All of these precious brethren were good and faithful men, some of whom helped in the up building
of our new town and territory. Brother George Simmons, our second clerk was the first mayor of
Crescent.
Some of the deacons who have faithfully served Shiloh Church are George Simmons, D. T. Crist,
J. D. Patrick, W. M. Moffitt, Lee Morrisett, Ed Gregory, Darrell Gregory, and Ted Gregory. All but one
of these precious brethren has gone home to be with their loving Saviour whom they served so
faithfully while here in this moral vineyard.
The Lord richly blessed this little church for one hundred and fourteen years. Although it had some
trials and tribulations, by God’s grace the church stood firm upon the doctrine and practice of the
faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
